Roughriders sign former Redblacks running back Ryquell Armstead

After wearing out his welcome in Ottawa, Ryquell Armstead is heading to the Prairies.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders, mired in a seven-game winless skid, signed the former Redblacks running back on Tuesday.

Armstead is fourth in the CFL with 623 rushing yards this season, but was cut by the Redblacks earlier this month.

Armstead was booted out of a game last month for an objectionable-conduct penalty and also was fined twice for violations of the CFL code of conduct.

Armstead, 27, was a fifth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019. He signed with four other NFL teams before coming north to join the Redblacks last year.

The Roughriders are in Calgary to face the Stampeders on Friday before they entertain the Redblacks next week in Regina.

Saskatchewan (5-7-1) is clinging to the third and final playoff spot in the West, one point ahead of the Edmonton Elks.
