COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Allrounder Angelo Mathews has been chosen Sri Lanka Twenty20 captain and fast bowler Lasith Malinga as his deputy for one year starting with the one-off match against New Zealand in Pallekele on Tuesday.

The appointments follow the resignation of Mahela Jayawardene as captain after the World Twenty20 final defeat to West Indies at home this month.

Malinga, however, has been rested for the New Zealand match and seam bowler Nuwan Kulasekara will stand in for him.

Jayawardene has also been left out of the match, and replaced by one-day international opener Upul Tharanga, who was not part of the World Twenty20 squad.

Offspiner Sachithra Senanayake takes the place of Ajantha Mendis, who was nursing a side strain. Mendis was the highest wicket-taker in the World Twenty20, with 15 in six matches.

New Zealand also plays five one-day internationals and two tests on its tour.
