OAKVILLE, Ont. — Reid Carruthers needed a win over former student Matt Dunstone in order to avoid early elimination in the WFG Masters.
After losing his first two games, Carruthers got on the board with a 7-2 victory over Dunstone during Draw 11 Thursday at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex.
Both Winnipeg clubs now hold 1-2 records with one round-robin game remaining for each.
Already leading 3-2, Carruthers closed out the game early with a four-ender in the sixth end.
The two skips are longtime friends with Carruthers serving as Dunstone's instructor in curling camps long ago.
Meanwhile, Switzerland’s Team Yannick Schwaller and Norway’s Team Magnus Ramsfjell both qualified for the playoffs at 3-0.
Schwaller stopped Team Korey Dropkin of the United States 8-3 and Ramsfjell scored four in the fourth during a 6-2 win over Toronto’s Team John Epping.
Dropkin has been eliminated at 0-3 while Epping is still in it for now at 1-2.
Defending champions Team Bruce Mouat from Scotland improved to a 2-1 record with a 5-3 decision against Team Brad Gushue (1-2) of St. John’s, N.L.
