Laura Walker is heading back to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
Walker and her Edmonton-based team successfully defended the Alberta women’s provincial curling championship with a 6-5 victory over Casey Scheidegger’s Lethbridge squad during Sunday’s final in Grande Prairie.
All tied up in the final frame, Walker held the hammer and just had to draw into the eight-foot circle with the last rock of the game.
The team of Walker, third Kate Cameron, second Taylor McDonald and lead Nadine Scotland will represent Alberta at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Jan. 28-Feb. 6, in Thunder Bay, Ont.
Walker captured her first career provincial championship in 2020 and was selected to return to nationals last year after Alberta cancelled its playdowns due to COVID-19. Her team claimed the bronze medal during the 2021 Scotties Tournament of Hearts held in the Calgary bubble.
Walker, Scheidegger and Edmonton’s Kelsey Rocque all finished round-robin play with 6-1 records. Since they were also tied 1-1 on head-to-head meetings, Walker earned the bye to the final due to draw-to-the-button shootout totals.
Scheidegger eliminated Rocque 10-7 in Saturday’s semifinal.
Meanwhile, Calgary’s Kevin Koe doubled up on Edmonton’s Ted Appelman 8-4 in the Boston Pizza Cup final. Koe will represent the home team at the Tim Hortons Brier, March 4-13, in Lethbridge, Alta.
