Brad Gushue and his crew from St. John’s, N.L., defeated Glenn Howard’s team from Penetanguishene, Ont., 6-1 to claim the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard men’s title Monday at the Oakville Curling Club in Oakville, Ont.
Team Gushue, who also won the tour event in 2016 and 2017, finished with an unblemished 6-0 record.
After giving up a steal in the third to open the scoring, Gushue settled for a single in the fourth and then turned the tables swiping points in the fifth and sixth ends to build a 3-1 lead.
Howard blanked the seventh end to retain the hammer coming home but needed to make an angle runback triple with the last rock of the game, and his raised stone was off the mark colliding with another stone.
Meanwhile, Hollie Duncan and her Woodstock-based team made it two in a row in the Stu Sells Series following up their Oakville Tankard win by capturing the Toronto Tankard women’s title. Duncan defeated Shannon Jay’s St. Thomas club 8-2 in the all-Ontario women’s final.
The Stu Sells Series features the top men’s and women’s teams from Canada and around the globe as they look to secure points in order to qualify for the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling.
