GRANADA, Spain — Canada’s women’s curling team posted two more wins on Monday to remain undefeated and secure first place in the round-robin portion of the 27th Winter Universiade tournament.

Winnipeg skip Breanne Meakin and her Carleton University squad improved to 8-0 thanks to an 8-7 extra-end win over Norway (4-4) and 9-7 victory against reigning Universiade champion Russia (6-2).

Norway jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Canada before Meakin’s rink rebounded to take a 7-4 lead after eight ends.

The Norwegians refused to go down without a fight and scored twice in the ninth end before stealing one point in the tenth, but with the hammer in the extra end Canada was able to clinch the win.

Later, Canada went down 3-1 to Russia but responded with five straight points in the middle part of the contest to keep its perfect record.

Canada wraps up round-robin play on Tuesday against the United States (3-5) and will then play in the semifinals on Thursday.

In men’s action, Winnipeg skip Matt Dunstone and his University of Manitoba teammates took down previously undefeated Norway (6-1) by a 9-7 score to extend their winning streak to three and improve to 4-3 going into the final day of the round-robin.

Canada cemented the win with three points in the eighth end.

With two matches remaining, Canada is tied with Sweden (4-3) for fourth place in the standings. They face the Swedes in a crucial duel on Tuesday morning before closing out the first round in the evening against Japan (3-4).
