SELKIRK, Man. — Sven Michel of Switzerland slipped past Calgary’s John Morris 6-5 during Draw 10 Friday morning at the Masters Grand Slam of Curling.
The lead bounced back and forth with Morris (1-2) stealing a couple in the fifth to go up 3-2 until Michel (2-1) pulled back ahead with a three-ender in six. Morris took two in seven to tie it heading home.
Elsewhere, Brad Gushue, of St. John’s, N.L., qualified for the playoffs with a 7-3 win over Toronto’s John Epping. Epping (2-1) opened with a single in the first and a steal of one in the second before Gushue (3-1) jumped ahead with a deuce in the third and a steal of one in the fourth. Epping added one in the fifth and shook hands after Gushue scored a four-spot in the sixth.
In the lone women’s division match, Edmonton’s Val Sweeting improved to a 3-1 record to advance with a 9-3 victory over Allison Flaxey. Sweeting scored two sets of three-enders and earned a steal of two in the seventh to as Flaxey, of Listowel, Ont., fell to 1-3.
