Gushue sweeps Wensman to win Newfoundland title

Brad Gushue is off to the Tim Hortons Brier following a 3-0 sweep in the best-of-five series against Gary Wensman in the N.L. Tankard (Anil Mungal).

Brad Gushue has captured his 12th provincial championship with a 3-0 sweep of the Newfoundland and Labrador Tankard best-of-five series against Gary Wensman in Labrador City, N.L.

Gushue, from St. John’s, defeated Wensman 8-6 Saturday morning in Game 3 to clinch the title and will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the Tim Hortons Brier.

Wensman picked up a single in the second and stole two in the third to take a 3-1 lead. The teams traded pairs of points through the fourth and fifth ends as Wensman maintained a two-point advantage. Gushue tied it with another deuce in six and then stole one in seven and two in eight to go up 8-5. Wensman settled for a point in the ninth.

Gushue took Game 1 with a 10-1 rout in six ends and was victorious in Game 2 winning 9-4 during Friday’s draws.

The team of Gushue, Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker have also won the Masters and Canadian Open Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling titles this season and now head to Calgary for the Brier, starting Feb. 28.
