CALGARY — Nova Scotia’s Glen MacLeod defeated Bob Smallwood of the Yukon 9-5 in a qualification-round game at the Canadian men’s curling championship.

MacLeod, Smallwood and Adam Casey of Prince Edward Island are playing a round robin for the right to enter the 12-team main draw of the Tim Hortons Brier starting Saturday in Calgary.

Nova Scotia (1-0) and P.E.I. (0-1) were to meet later Friday. Yukon (1-1) downed P.E.I. 8-1 on Thursday.

The Brier’s new format includes a Team Canada for the first time, which has been part of the national women’s championship for years.

Curling Canada introduced the qualifying tournament this year in order to accommodate entries from every province and territory.
