Manuel Neuer passes Gianluigi Buffon in all-time goalkeeper appearances at Euros

With his appearance in Germany’s final group-stage tilt with Switzerland on Sunday, Manuel Neuer became the all-time leader in goalkeeper appearances at the European Championship.

Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon held the record for 12 years before Neuer etched his name into European history with his 18th appearance on Sunday in Frankfurt.

Neuer, 38, is playing in his eighth major tournament as Germany’s last form of defence and has posted wins in each of his first two outings during group play at Euro 2024.

Neuer was unavailable for much of 2023 after suffering a leg fracture that sidelined him from international duty for 18 months and placed his spot as Germany’s No. 1 goalkeeper in jeopardy ahead of June’s tournament.

The 2014 World Cup winner has been lights out for Germany, helping the host side seal a berth in the knockout stage with just a single goal conceded in his first two matches.
