Canada's Aaron Cockerill is off to a strong start at the Bahrain Championship.
The golfer, who hails from Stony Mountain, Man., fired a 6-under 66 in the first round on Thursday, putting him two strokes back of leader Tom Vaillant of France at the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) event.
Zander Lombard of South Africa and Joel Girrbach of Switzerland are tied for second at 7 under.
The 31-year-old Cockerill is 11th in the tour standings after five events this season, highlighted by a tie for fourth last month at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
Cockerill, the lone Canadian on the DP World Tour, has been playing the circuit since 2020.
Cockerill is 210th in the world golf rankings, eighth amongst Canadians.
