Calgary Stampeders punter Rob Maver has been named the Red and White’s recipient of the Herm Harrison Memorial Award for the second consecutive year.
The award was instituted in 2013 and annually recognizes a Stampeders player for their outstanding involvement in community service. One of the franchise’s all-time greats, Herm Harrison played for the Stampeders from 1964-72 and was a West Division all-star on six occasions and a CFL all-star three times. Harrison remained in Calgary following his playing days where he continued to support numerous community initiatives.
As this year’s recipient, Maver most notably co-chaired the Rob Maver Guts N Glory flag football tournament in September and helped raise over $36,000 for Crohn’s and Colitis Canada.
“It’s a privilege to receive for a second time the award which honours Mr. Harrison’s legacy,” said Maver, who has now spent a full decade playing for the Red and White.
“I accept this on behalf of the Calgary Stampeders and the Guts N Glory committee. This belongs to them for without their many efforts and support, none of what we have accomplished would have been possible.”
His third annual flag football tournament took place at McMahon Stadium in September and he has played a significant role in raising more than $102,000 since the inaugural event.
Maver committed hundreds of hours in a leadership role as he played a major role in planning and infrastructure efforts, facility arrangements, media partnerships, fundraising and sponsorship. He also coached a team of his own on the day of the tournament.
His work with Crohn’s and Colitis Canada dates back to 2016 and includes Kicking Crohn’s in the Butt program, sponsored by Truman Insurance. For each punting yard Maver accumulated this season, Truman Insurance will donate $1 to the Calgary chapter of Crohn’s and Colitis Canada.
In 2019, a total of $4,549 will be donated. Presenting at speaking engagements, leading Crohn’s and Colitis information nights and hosting multiple social events were other highlights of his extensive involvement with the volunteer-based charity.
In addition, Maver – who lives in Calgary year-round – has coached several kickers and punters throughout the local community, passing down his detailed knowledge of the game to the next generation.
Maver has also spent the past three years as a TELUS Wise ambassador, presenting to children and seniors on the topics of online safety, cyberbullying and maintaining a clean digital footprint.
