CARSON, Calif. — Officials in Carson, California, have staged a pep rally in support of a proposed NFL stadium that could bring the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers to a new, shared home in the Los Angeles suburb.

The event Friday at Carson City Hall took on the air of a celebration as Raiders fans waved flags and cheered, and officials spoke of the opportunity for a wave of new jobs and economic activity for the area.

The proposed $1.7 billion stadium was announced by the teams Thursday night. It’s the latest in years of proposals to bring the NFL back to the region. Other current proposals would build stadiums in downtown Los Angeles or the city of Inglewood.

Mayor Jim Dear told the crowd a stadium would change the city forever.
