The Miami Dolphins have acquired running back Matt Breida from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a fifth-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The Dolphins have been in the market for a running back all off-season, and finally landed on Breida and his $3.259-million salary for 2020 after reportedly exploring trades for Todd Gurley and Leonard Fournette.
Entering the 2020 NFL Draft, Miami held 14 picks and was expected to use at least one on a running back but had yet to select a player at the position at the time of the Breida acquisition.
Breida, 25, joins fellow newcomer Jordan Howard in the Dolphins backfield, as the latter joined Miami on a two-year, $10-million contract last month. Running back was a position of desperate need for general manager Chris Grier entering the off-season: the Dolphins ranked dead last in rushing last season with just 1,156 yards on the ground, averaging just 72.25 yards per game.
Signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in May 2017, Breida has racked up more than 1,900 yards rushing and six touchdowns on the ground in 43 games, averaging five yards per carry. The Brandon, Fla., native also contributed in the passing game with 561 receiving yards and four touchdowns over three seasons in San Francisco.
