Report: F1 designer Adrian Newey to join Aston Martin next year

Adrian Newey, one of the greatest aerodynamicists in Formula One history, is set to sign a five-year contract with Aston Martin, BBC Sport reported Saturday.

Newey will join the team starting in March with the deal that could be worth up to £30 million (CAD 53.44 million) a season, according to BBC Sport.

The 65-year-old announced in May he was leaving Red Bull in the “first quarter of 2025” after nearly two decades with the team. Newey stepped back from his role as chief technical officer to focus on the company’s first hypercar in the meantime.

The Aston Martin team is owned by Canadian businessman Lawrence Stroll. Drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, Lawrence’s son, signed contract extensions earlier this year.

Newey has won 12 constructors’ championships and 13 drivers’ championships over his legendary career with Williams, McLaren and Red Bull.

He joined Red Bull in 2006 and helped secure a four-peat of both titles with driver Sebastian Vettel (2010-13).

Red Bull has won the past three drivers’ championships with Max Verstappen plus back-to-back constructors’ titles.
