Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva says no charges are expected to be laid after Tuesday’s single-vehicle car crash involving golf legend Tiger Woods.
“We don’t contemplate any charges whatsoever in this crash,” Villanueva said in a Facebook Live press conference with reporters on Wednesday. “This remains an accident. An accident is not a crime. They do happen unfortunately.”
An SUV Woods was driving in a suburb of Los Angeles crossed a median, hit a tree and ended up on its side early on Tuesday morning. Woods was conscious after the crash and was taken to a nearby trauma centre by ambulance. Once there, he underwent multiple hours of surgery on his shattered tibia in his right ankle, which included inserting a rod and screws into his leg.
In a statement released late Tuesday night, Woods was said to be “awake, responsive and recovering in the hospital.”
Villanueva, who also spoke to the media on Tuesday about the crash, reconfirmed some notable facts on Wednesday, including that officials do not believe Woods was impaired at the time of the accident. The sheriff said that the stretch of road where the accident occurred — which includes a slope and sharp curve — has a dangerous reputation, adding that 13 accidents had occurred there in the past 13 months.
“We have seen accidents with far less obvious (damage) that are fatalities,” Villanueva said in an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Tuesday.
