Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and some of the top golfers in the PGA are set to take their talents indoors.
The TGL, an interactive golf league founded by Woods and McIlroy, will kick its season off on Jan. 7 at the custom-built SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Its first match on Jan. 7 will feature New York Golf Club (Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young) against The Bay Golf Club (Ludvig Åberg, Wyndham Clark, Shane Lowry and Min Woo Lee).
Woods' Jupiter Links Golf Club will face Los Angeles Golf Club in the second match on Jan. 14. The 48-year-old announced on Sept. 13 that he had undergone another surgery on his lower back to try to relieve spasms that plagued him this season. It was the sixth surgery on his lower back in the past 10 years.
Woods' team won't wait long to take on McIlroy's Boston Common Golf, with the two clubs going head-to-head in the fourth match on Jan. 27. McIlroy's team also features Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama.
Players will play out of a 250,000-square-foot tech-infused venue, which is about the size of a football field and wraps 1,500 fans around TGL’s field of play.
There will be six teams in the first season of TGL and each match will feature one team versus another over 15 virtual holes.
The team matches will feature three of the four roster players each time, with lineups shaped by availability around the PGA Tour schedule. The league will take off the weeks of the Genesis Invitational and Players Championship, the highlights of the first three months of the tour season.
Sportsnet will be the official Canadian rights-holders of TGL and will air every match of the season-long competition.
While there are no Canadian teams, there have been discussions with a variety of Canadian partners about potential expansion opportunities in the future, Sportsnet has learned. Canadians are golf-mad, and it was easy to see the excitement level when Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith and Mackenzie Hughes (the former two both call West Palm home) got inside the ropes as a team at the Presidents Cup.
