After the Nova Scotia government cancelled the 2021 Women’s World Hockey Championship scheduled for May 6-16, the IIHF announced that the tournament would be rescheduled for later this year.
With the tournament now planned for Aug. 20-31, at a site to be determined in Canada, it appears Alberta is the frontrunner to host the event.
“The idea is to go back [to Canada], maybe to Alberta,” IIHF president Rene Fasel during Hockey Night in Canada. “It will be in the hands of Hockey Canada.”
“Calgary [is] really trying to make a run to host this event,” added Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman during Headlines on Saturday.
The rescheduled tournament was welcomed news for players and fans, who were understandably upset when the IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championship was cancelled for a second consecutive year on short notice. Many players took to social media to express their dismay for the cancellation, with some saying it felt like “the rug (was) pulled out from under us.”
The August tournament will allow players return to their club teams to begin the next regular season on time and will not conflict with November’s qualifying tournament for the Olympics.
