Sportsnet.ca – Robbie Ftorek has agreed in principle on a deal that will keep him coaching the Ontario Hockey League’s Erie Otters for the next three years, the Erie Times-News reported Wednesday.
Ftorek took over from Peter Sidorkiewicz – who remained as an assistant coach – in October and compiled a 15-34-2-2 record in the 53 games he coached. The team missed the playoffs for the third season in row with an overall record of 18-46-2-2.
Otters GM Sherry Bassin saw enough of the former NHL player and coach to sign him long-term, but the Times-News reported that Ftorek has an out clause that will allow him to move to the pro ranks if he ever gets an offer.
"I owe it to him like I would for anybody else," Bassin said of the clause to the paper.
Ftorek, 56 coached both Los Angeles and New Jersey in the NHL and won an AHL championship with Albany in 1996.
