The top-ranked prospect for the upcoming NHL Draft has been handed a suspension.
Alexis Lafreniere of the Rimouski Oceanic was suspended three games by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League on Tuesday for a hit to the head over the weekend against the Quebec Remparts.
Lafreniere came across the ice just seven seconds into the third period of Sunday’s game and elbowed Quebec’s Thomas Caron in the head.
He received a major penalty and game misconduct on the play.
Lafreniere, who was named the MVP at the recent world junior championship where Canada won gold, was ranked No. 1 on NHL Central Scouting’s midterm rankings released earlier this month.
The 2020 NHL Draft takes place in June in Montreal.
