KINGSTON, Ont. — Michael Sgarbossa scored three times and set up one more as the Sudbury Wolves downed the host Kingston Frontenacs 5-1 on Sunday afternoon in Ontario Hockey League action.
Sgarbossa’s total of 47 goals and 102 points in 66 games secures him the OHL scoring title as he finished two points ahead of the Ottawa 67’s Tyler Toffoli.
Derek Schoenmakers had a goal and an assist for the Wolves (36-26-6), who finish the season as the Eastern Conference’s fifth seed, Michael MacDonald scored a single goal while Nathan Pancel chipped in with two asissts.
Cody Alcock scored the lone goal for the last-place Frontenacs (19-41-8), who finished the year losers of their last eight contests.
Johan Mattsson made 41 saves for the win while Igor Bobkov turned away 21 shots in a losing effort.
Sudbury went 2 for 5 on the power play as Kingston scored once on five chances with the man advantage.
The Wolves will open the post season against the fourth-seeded Brampton Battalion.
BRAMPTON 4, OTTAWA 3
BRAMPTON, Ont. — Mitchell Porowski’s third period goal was the difference as the Brampton Battalion defeated the visiting Ottawa 67’s 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.
Ian Watters, Sam Carrick and Zach Bell also scored for the Battalion (36-22-10), who finished the regular season fourth in the Eastern Conference, while Philip Lane chipped in with two assists.
Ryan Van Stralen had a goal and an assist for the 67’s (40-20-8), who are the second seed in the East, Tyler Toffoli and Cody Ceci scored a goal apiece and Shane Prince had two assists.
Keegan Wilson stopped 15 shots for the win as Michael Nishi, the much busier of the two netminders, turned away 41 shots in defeat.
Brampton went 2 for 4 on the power play while Ottawa failed to score on three chances with the man advantage.
The Battalion will open the playoffs against the fifth-seeded Sudbury Wolves and the 67’s will host the seventh-seeded Belleville Bulls.
NIAGARA 2, MISSISSAUGA 0
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Christopher Festarini turned away 14 to shots to earn his first OHL shutout as the Niagara IceDogs blanked the host Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Tom Kuhnhackl and Joel Wigle both scored for the IceDogs (47-18-3), who head into the post season as the top seed in the Eastern Conference after winning their fifth straight contest.
The Majors (33-28-7) had their five-game winning streak halted after being shutout for the fourth time this season. They will enter the playoffs as the sixth seed in the East.
Spencer Martin stopped 46 of 48 shots, earning the game’s first star, in a losing effort.
Niagara’s top-ranked power play failed to score on three chances with the man advantage while Mississauga went 0 for 1 with the extra man.
The IceDogs will open the playoffs against the eighth-seeded Oshawa Generals while the Majors will kick off the post season against the third-ranked Barrie Colts.
PETERBOROUGH 8, OSHAWA 6
OSHAWA, Ont. — Andrew Yogan scored four times and set up one more as the Peterborough Petes defeated the host Oshawa Generals 8-6 on Sunday.
Lino Martschini had a goal and two assists for the Petes (27-34-7), who will miss the post season for the second straight year, while Derek Mathers, Cody Thompson and Stephen Pierog added a goal apiece.
Alan Quine chipped in with two assists.
Emerson Clarke scored twice for the Generals (31-30-7), who hold the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference, Christian Thomas, Andy Andreoff and J.P. Labardo each had a goal and an assist and Lucas Lessio scored a single goal.
Andrew D’Agostini made 33 for the win as Kevin Bailie allowed seven goals on 37 shots in defeat.
Peterborough went 1 for 5 on the power play while Oshawa scored once on five chances with the man advantage.
Oshawa will face the first-seed Niagara IceDogs to open the post season.
SAULT STE. MARIE 5, KITCHENER 2
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. — David Broll had a goal and two assists as the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds beat the Kitchener Rangers 5-2 in Ontario Hockey League play Sunday.
Ryan Sproul added a pair of goals for the Greyhounds (29-33-6). Nick Cousins added a goal and an assist in the win while Brett Findlay also scored. Andrew Fritsch had two assists for the Greyhounds.
Goaltender Matt Murray stopped 28 shots for the Greyhounds.
Brandon Lesway and Radek Faksa scored for Kitchener (42-24-2).
Rookie Jack Moylan got the start for Kitchener but was pulled after giving up four goals on 14 shots. Franky Palazzese came in and stopped 20-of-21 shots the rest of the way for the Rangers.
