Whalers, IceDogs advance in OHL playoffs

GUELPH, Ont. — J.T. Miller scored 5:36 into overtime as the Plymouth Whalers eliminated the Guelph Storm from the playoffs with a 2-1 victory on Sunday in Ontario Hockey League playoff action.

Plymouth, the second-seed in the Western Conference, won the series 4-2.

Tom Wilson also scored for the Whalers while Stefan Noesen picked up an assist to move into a tie for top spot in OHL playoff scoring with seven goals and 14 points in six games.

Kitchener Rangers’ forward Michael Catenacci also has 14 points, in only five games, but just two goals.

Jason Dickinson scored the lone goal for the Storm, who managed only seven goals in the final four games of the series, all losses, after opening the playoffs with two wins.

Scott Wedgewood turned away 35 shots for his ninth career OHL playoff victory as Garret Sparks, the game’s first star, stopped 34 shots in defeat.

Plymouth scored on their only powerplay of the game while Guelph failed to score on either of their chances with the man advantage.

NIA 4, OSH 1

OSHAWA, Ont. — David Pacan scored twice, including the game winner, as the Niagara IceDogs eliminated the Oshawa Generals from the first-round of the playoffs with a 4-1 victory on Sunday in Ontario Hockey League playoff action.

Niagara won the best-of-seven series 4-2.

Pacan, who was named the game’s first star, broke a 1-1- tie 1:36 into the third period with a shorthanded goal, then added another at 16:01 to secure the victory.

Alex Friesen had a goal and an assist for the IceDogs, Brock Beukeboom scored once and Pacan picked up an assist for a three-point night.

Julian Melchiori scored the lone goal for the Generals, who dropped back-to-back games to finish their season.

Mark Visentin made 27 saves for his 14th career OHL post-season victory while Daniel Altshuller turned away 28 of 31 shots in a losing effort.

Niagara went 0 for 3 on the power play as Oshawa scored once on four chances with the man advantage.

The IceDogs must wait for both the Ottawa 67’s-Belleville Bulls series and Barrie Colts-Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors series to wrap up before they will know who they play in the second round.
