The Guelph Storm have traded defenceman Ryan Merkley to the Peterborough Petes for forward Pavel Gogolev along with a combination of draft picks.
Merkley was drafted first overall by the Storm back in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection and was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the first round (21st overall) of the 2018 NHL draft. The Sharks also signed the Mississauga, Ont., native to a three-year entry-level contract back in July.
In 28 games this season, the 18-year-old defenceman has five goals, 34 assists and 39 points for Guelph. Merkley also has 30 goals, 131 assists and 161 points in 153 career games.
Gogolev was the Petes’ eighth-overall pick from the 2016 draft and has seven goals, 12 assists and 19 points in 29 games this season. The 18-year-old left-winger has 42 goals, 35 assists and 77 points in 148 career games in Peterborough.
Along with Gogolev, Storm also received a package of draft picks including; a compensatory second-round pick in 2019, the Windsor Spitfire’s third-round pick in 2021, the Petes’ fourth-round pick in 2022 (conditional), a second-round pick in 2023 (conditional) and a third-round pick in 2024 (conditional)
