New kids on the block
It didn’t take long for Ryan White and Martin Hanzal to make an impact on their new team.
White had a goal and an assist while Hanzal logged 16:43 in each player’s first game with the Minnesota Wild in a thrilling 5-4 overtime win over the Los Angeles Kings.
The duo was acquired by Minnesota on Sunday night, along with a 2017 fourth-round draft pick from the Arizona Coyotes for a 2017 first-, a 2018 second- and a 2019 conditional fourth-round draft choice.
That was complicated
The Washington Capitals made a big splash just two days before the trade deadline by acquiring defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk from the St. Louis Blues.
If you like puzzles, then this trade is for you. Check out the thread on Twitter from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman describing the conditions for how St. Louis picks up a conditional pick in this transaction.
Leading by example
Max Pacioretty knows his team has been struggling, so the Montreal Canadiens captain has taken it upon himself to right the ship.
Pacioretty scored twice — his 30th and 31st goals of the season — in a 4-3 come-from-behind overtime win over the New Jersey Devils. It’s the fifth time in his career that he’s reached the 30-goal plateau.
Montreal has stumbled in recent times, hiring Claude Julien to replace Michel Therrien as head coach on Feb. 14 in an attempt to spark the team. It has taken the Canadiens a couple games to get used to their new coach but they’ve now won three of their last four.
Sportsnet’s Eric Engels wrote about how Montreal’s torturous past month shows nothing will come easy.
From BCHL to NHL
Kyle Turris‘s power-play goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning was a personal milestone as he recorded the 300th point of his career.
Turris has been having a solid season with Ottawa, scoring 22 goals and 22 assists in 61 games. His career high is 64 points in 2014-15.
The 27-year-old is in his 10th NHL season and sixth with the Senators after spending the early part of his career with the Phoenix Coyotes. Not bad for a player that played his junior hockey with the Burnaby Express of the tier-two British Columbia Hockey League.
