The Gulls are the Anaheim Ducks’ AHL affiliate. Next season will be the franchise’s first one in San Diego, having spent the last 15 years in Norfolk, Virginia as the Admirals.

Prior to taking a job with the Oilers ahead of the 2013-14 season, Eakins served as head coach of the AHL’s Toronto Marlies for four seasons.

Eakins was believed to be in the running for the head coaching job for the Vancouver Giants of the WHL.
