This is the stage the rock star craves.
New York City. Stanley Cup Playoffs. Facing one of the greatest goaltenders of our age.
Minutes after Madison Square Garden swelled with an “Ovie sucks!” chant Thursday, Alex Ovechkin sniped one of the prettiest wrist shots you’ll ever see — a 128 km/h laser beam that zipped past Henrik Lundqvist and pinged off the back of the net and back onto the ice so quickly, the commentator sounded uncertain if it went in at all.
Watch in awe:
Then the Washington Capitals captain toured around the King’s net and chirped: “All series, baby. All series.”
He was mic’d up for the occasion, which has set the series’ tone early:
Ovechkin led the NHL with 53 goals this year and has scored in every game against the Rangers, who now trail the Caps 1-0.
“He was good today,” Nicklas Backstrom told reporters of Ovechkin. “He had a lot of puck, a lot of chances. I mean, he’s always good when he shoots that puck.”
