Ducks owners congratulate Oilers fans for ‘inspiring’ national anthem

Listen as the fans inside Rogers Place sings the American national anthem after a microphone malfunctions.

As country singer Brett Kissel went on to the Rogers Place skating surface prior to Game 3 of the Ducks-Oilers series to sing the Star Spangled Banner his mic stopped working. Rather than panic, Kissel handed the reins to the packed house of fans, who didn’t hesitate to take over for him.

What followed was a tremendous display. The Canadian arena erupted in song as everyone sang the American national anthem (see at the top). The event was quickly trending on Twitter.

On Monday, Anaheim Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli released a statement:

“Congratulations to the Edmonton fans for creating such a special moment last night by singing both of the national anthems. To hear the audience passionately sing both the Canadian and United States anthems was inspiring and powerful. Well done, Edmonton!”

Oilers fans have earned a lot of attention for their national anthems this playoff season, but up until now it was all because of how they regularly sang O, Canada. Singing the national anthem of our neighbours to the south was even more unique and special.
