Avalanche’s Cale Makar to miss game vs. Flames with upper-body injury

Watch as Brad Marchand lays a punishing body check on Cale Makar that forces him to leave the game.

The Colorado Avalanche will not have rookie defenceman Cale Makar in the lineup when they take on the Calgary Flames Monday.

Makar is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

The 21-year-old was injured early in the third period against the Boston Bruins Saturday. As Makar was holding the puck behind the Avalanche’s net, he was hit by Brad Marchand. The hit left Makar in visable discomfort and he left the game shortly after.

Makar has exploded onto the scene in his first year in the NHL and leads all rookies with 28 points in 29 games. He also has a plus-10 rating and quarterbacks the Avalanche’s top power play unit.

In other Avalanche news, goaltender Philipp Grubauer — who also left the Bruins game with an injury — will be available to backup Pavel Francouz on Monday.
