Gary Bettman announced on Thursday that the NHL has agreed to open the expansion process to a team in Seattle.
The process is going to be similar to the Vegas Golden Knights expansion and will reportedly cost $650 million, and if an expansion team is ultimately located in Seattle it will not be until the 2020-21 season.
This process does not guarantee that a team will eventually play in Seattle, but over the next few months the city is allowed to have a season-ticket drive to gauge interest in hosting an NHL franchise.
Seattle is the only city open to the application process.
