Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Cody Franson has cleared waivers and been assigned to the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, the team announced on Tuesday.
Franson was somewhat surprisingly placed on waivers on Monday just a few months after signing a one-year deal with the Blackhawks in October. In 23 games for Chicago this season, the 30-year-old blue-liner has one goal and seven points, while averaging 16:37 in ice time.
Franson has more trade value now that he’s cleared, since an acquiring team could move him freely between NHL and AHL.

The Blackhawks also announced the recall of defenceman Erik Gustafsson from the AHL. The native of Nynashamn, Sweden has 17 points in 25 games for the IceHogs this season.
