St. Louis Blues' Carl Gunnarsson (left) landed a new deal with St. Louis.

The St. Louis Blues signed defenceman Carl Gunnarsson to a three-year extension worth $8.7 million, the team announced Friday evening.

Gunnarsson, 29, was in the final year of his contract and was originally scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2015-16 season.

He has two goals and five assists while averaging 17:36 minutes of ice time in 62 games with St. Louis this season.

Gunnarsson is in his second season with the Blues after he was acquired in a trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenceman Roman Polak and a draft pick.

He has appeared in 427 career NHL games with the Maple Leafs and Blues, scoring 19 goals with 86 assists.

The Maple Leafs originally selected the Swedish blueliner in the seventh round (194th overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft.
