Blues sign defenceman Niko Mikkola to an entry-level contract

The St. Louis Blues have signed defenceman Niko Mikkola to a two-year, entry-level contract, the team announced Thursday.

Mikkola was drafted by St. Louis 127th overall in the fifth round of the 2015 NHL Draft.

The 22-year-old defenceman spent the last two seasons in the Finnish Elite League, scoring two goals, nine assists and racking up 54 penalty minutes in 50 games. The six-foot-five, 198-pound defenceman also appeared in 16 playoff games, leading the Finnish Elite league with a plus-9 rating, and helping Tappara capture the leagues silver medal.

Overall, Mikkola has 171 career games under his belt, totalling 36 points (nine goals, 27 assists) and 169 penalty minutes. He has also represented Finland in the 2016 U-20 World Junior Championship, where he led the team to the gold medal.
