Bruins’ Brandon Carlo to miss playoffs with ankle injury

Brandon Carlo would need to be stretchered off after getting his skate caught in the ice and falling.

The Boston Bruins will be without defenceman Brandon Carlo for the remainder of the regular season and the upcoming Stanley Cup Playoffs, the team announced Tuesday.

Per general manager Don Sweeney, Carlo suffered a fractured left ankle and will require three to four months of recovery time.

Carlo appeared to catch an edge along the boards in Saturday’s game against the Florida Panthers, causing him to fall awkwardly on his ankle. He was stretchered off, and head coach Bruce Cassidy said after the game the impending diagnosis was “probably not going to be good news.”

Tuesday’s update makes the return of rookie defenceman Charlie McAvoy that much more significant. McAvoy was sidelined a month with an MCL sprain, and returned just in time for the Bruins’ big bout against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Bruins have been dealing with a laundry list of injuries throughout much of the season. Players currently sidelined include Rick Nash (upper body), Tommy Wingels (hand), and Riley Nash (head) and Sean Kuraly (upper body).

McAvoy’s blue line partner, captain Zdeno Chara, has also missed time this season but returned to action on Sunday.
