Cam Talbot to start Game 1 for Flames against Jets

Sportsnet's Dan Murphy previewed the only all-Canadian matchup in the Stanley Cup qualifier round, between the Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets.

The Calgary Flames will start veteran goalie Cam Talbot in net for Game 1 of their Stanley Cup Qualifiers series against the Winnipeg Jets.

Talbot, 33, beat out David Rittich in the tightly contested starting job. In his first season with the Flames, Talbot posted a 12-10-2 record with a 2.63 goals-against average, .919 save percentage and two shutouts.

Rittich and Talbot split the job in the one exhibition game Calgary played in, a 4-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, with both goalies giving up two goals.

“We haven’t made up our mind yet,” head coach Geoff Ward said of his goalie battle after the Oilers game. “We want to do our proper diligence and we want to sit down and take a proper look at it.”

Connor Hellebuyck, a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, will start Game 1 for the Jets.
