Canadiens seeking big return for defenceman Jeff Petry

This week on Saturday Headlines they discuss the latest news of the NHL.

Despite the buzz surrounding Montreal Canadiens defenceman Jeff Petry in the lead-up to Monday’s NHL trade deadline, the asking price for the veteran suggests he might be staying put.

“There’s no question that probably the most asked about player during the last little while has been Jeff Petry,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said during the Headlines segment of Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday. “He’s had a great year, he’s very valuable for Montreal.

“I’ve just heard the ask is huge and I think most teams expect he’ll stay in Montreal because it’s a big ask. They recognize his value.”

Petry has nine goals and 37 points in 63 games this year with the Canadiens. He leads the team in hits (154) and hasn’t missed a game since the 2016-17 season.

The 32-year-old is under contract through next season with a $5.5 million average annual value.

After a shutout win over the Ottawa Senators, Montreal is six points out of a playoff spot with 18 games remaining.
