Canucks bolster blue line, add Quinn Hughes with seventh-overall pick

Quintin Hughes speaks with Tara Slone after being selected seventh overall by the Vancouver Canucks at the NHL Draft.

The Vancouver Canucks have selected defenceman Quinn Hughes with the No. 7 overall pick at the 2018 NHL Draft.

Hughes is the second blue liner selected at this year’s draft behind Rasmus Dahlin in a class filled with talented rearguards. The offensive defenceman is known for being gifted skater with an ability to read plays well and move the puck with authority.

The five-foot-ten defenceman out of Orlando, Fla. is coming off a strong freshman year with the University of Michigan, registering five goals and 24 assists for 29 points in 37 games. He’s the oldest of three brothers already making waves in the hockey world, with younger brother Jack a likely first-rounder next year and Luke already turning heads at just 14 years old.

The rebuilding Canucks have a total of six picks in this year’s draft, currently poised to pick next at 37th overall on Saturday.
