Coach’s Corner: Oilers better make playoffs now

Don Cherry and Ron MacLean discuss Connor McDavid, debate Bob Hartley’s fine and react to the results of the NHL Draft Lottery.

By winning the Connor McDavid sweepstakes, the Edmonton Oilers will have a huge target on their backs next season and Don Cherry says a player like McDavid should be enough for them to snap a nine-year playoff drought.

“If you don’t make the playoffs next year you all should be fired,” Cherry said Saturday on Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada.

Cherry has hyped up McDavid since before he joined the Erie Otters in 2012 and has been doing it ever since.

“He is the best,” Cherry said. “A great kid. Very polite. You would love him as a son. He is absolutely beautiful. His mom and dad are great.”
