It appears Gilbert Brule’s future in the NHL is in question as the Phoenix Coyotes released him from his professional tryout offer Thursday.

Brule, drafted sixth overall in 2006 by the Columbus Blue Jackets, has had a difficult time finding a home in the NHL in recent years.

The 26-year-old spent the 2012-13 season playing for Zurich of the Swiss elite league. He had spent 2011-12 with the Coyotes, registering 14 points in 33 games.

Brule’s most productive season as a pro was in 2009-10 with the Edmonton Oilers when he had 17 goals, 37 points in 65 games.

The Coyotes also announced Thursday the team assigned forwards Andy Miele and Jordan Szwarz to the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League.
