The New York Islanders won’t be the only NHL team throwing back to the ‘90s this season.

The Arizona Coyotes announced on Twitter they’ll go back to their original look for a March 5 game against the Vancouver Canucks. If you’ll recall, when the Coyotes first landed in Phoenix from Winnipeg in 1996 they wore “Kachina” jerseys using distinct desert colours. It was a different look than NHL fans were accustomed to and it sticks out for its originality to this day.

According to the team’s website, the first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a throwback Jeremy Roenick bobble head.

The Coyotes changed to their current red brick jersey in 2003. There is one player remaining on the Coyotes who was a part of the last squad to wear the Kachina jerseys – and that, of course, is Shane Doan.

Taking the uniqueness a step further, the Coyotes introduced a third jersey in 1998 that was a dark green colour and featured a crescent moon over a midnight desert. The team won’t be using those ones (yet). One step at a time.

Last week, the New York Islanders announced they would wear the “Fisherman” jerseys they used from 1995-97 for a Feb. 3 game against the Florida Panthers. This is the start of a movement folks.

How about a ‘90s jersey week across the NHL?
