Daniel Winnik loses piece of his ear blocking shot

After the game, coach Barry Trotz dropped the information that Daniel Winnik lost a piece of his ear during this shot block in the third period.

Hear ye, hear ye, blocking shots can be a health hazard.

Mid-way through the third period of Thursday’s Panthers-Capitals game, Daniel Winnik dropped to the ice to block a shot from the point. It was a bit of a scary moment as Reilly Smith’s shot appeared to hit Winnik in the back of the head.

As Don Cherry always says, make sure you turn your face away from the puck when going for a block.

Amazingly, Winnik would return to the game. Even more amazing, though, was the post-game revelation that he lost a piece of his ear on the play.

With Halloween coming up, maybe Winnik can go as Evander Holyfield? Vincent van Gogh?
