It has been a busy summer for P.K. Subban but that did not stop him from taking the big leap and proposing to girlfriend Lindsay Vonn.
The NHL defenceman and Olympic skier announced their engagement in Vogue on Friday, with their proposal taking place their home in Los Angeles on Aug. 14. Subban popped the question to Vonn after buying an emerald ring in Beverly Hills and decided to take the simple rout rather than go for an extravagant proposal.
“I wanted it to be very personal and about how serious I’m taking it,” Subban explained. “It’s about us and our family. I kept it close to the chest.
“I got the ring and said, ‘You know what? I’m just going to do it home.’ Everything kind of came together on that day. Everyone says the stars aligned — well, it was actually a full moon. I was worried because I knew she would want to be dressed up and not in her pyjamas, and it just so happened she had a business meeting, so she was fully dressed up.”
Subban and Vonn first met in 2017 at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports Awards but at the time Vonn was already in a relationship. He spoke with her sister Karin who was “working really, really hard for me,” despite her older sibling already being with someone else.
They would later form a long-distance relationship which included speaking on the phone every day while she was competing in Europe. Despite being hesitant about getting into another relationship after six years of marriage to fellow skier Thomas Vonn, Lindsay knew Subban was the one.
“Right off the bat, I knew he was different,” Vonn explained. “But I’d been married before, so I was pretty hesitant to let myself think that I could find someone that I would want to be married to again. After a few months of dating, I knew he was the one I wanted to be with, though. He makes me happy, and he’s so positive and energetic.”
The couple does not have any immediate plans for a wedding date since they have been dealing with the move to New Jersey after Subban was traded to the Devils by the Nashville Predators.
“We’re in such a busy time right now. We’re trying to move to New Jersey,” Vonn said. “I just want to enjoy the moment and the engagement. We’re not in a big hurry to get married. It kind of depends on his playing schedule, and when we have time to sit down and go through it. I don’t want to stress him out because he has a big season coming.”
