The New Jersey Devils issued a statement Thursday regarding forward Ben Johnson who was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl.
Johnson, 22, spent the 2015-16 season in the Devils system with the Albany Devils of the American Hockey League and the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL. The Devils originally selected the Calumet, MI, native in the third round, 90th overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft.
Via official Devils release:
“Earlier today, the club was informed of Windsor Superior Court Justice Kirk Munroe’s ruling against Mr. Johnson. Based on the ruling, the club has initiated the process required to terminate Mr. Johnson’s Standard Player’s Contract.”
The organization will have no further comment.
Johnson was found guilty of sexually assaulting the 16-year-old girl in the washroom of a Windsor, Ontario, bar in March 2013.
