Rumours of an NHL expansion are flying and Don Cherry is chiming in with support, albeit limited in scope.
Never shy to share his opinions, Cherry told the Toronto Sun Thursday where he feels the first expansion team should go.
“Quebec Nordiques all the way,” says Cherry. “It’s a no-brainer. They have an arena half built, the greatest fans and so much tradition.”
If the Jets can make a return to Winnipeg, then it’s not out of the question.
The rumours started Tuesday night after a tweet by Howard Bloom of Sports Business News (@SportsBizNews) suggested there are already four locations selected for the teams, including Quebec City and a second hockey franchise in Toronto. Two additional franchises would be added in Las Vegas and Seattle.
However Cherry disagrees with the NHL’s potential plans to expand so quickly.
“I don’t think they would expand by four at once. That’s a lot,” says Cherry. “As for a second team here, sure it would be great and would work. I also think it would be terrific in Hamilton. The problem is, either way it would not hurt the Leafs but hurt Buffalo.”
