The Anaheim Ducks have signed defenceman Jani Hakanpaa to a one-year contract extension that runs through the 2020-21 season, the team announced Wednesday.

Hakanpaa appeared in five games for the Ducks — the first contests of his NHL career — this season, scoring once. The 28-year-old also scored one goal and added 12 assists in 47 games with the San Diego Gulls, Anaheim’s AHL affiliate.

A native of Kirkkonummi, Finland, Hakanpaa was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the fourth round, 104th overall, in the 2010 NHL Draft.

Hakanpaa was signed by the Ducks as a free agent in 2019. Previously, he played in the Finnish Elite League with Karpat and Espoo, leading all defencemen in plus/minus in both 2018-19 and 2017-18.
