Edmonton Oilers hire Jim Playfair as associate coach

Sam Cosentino joins HC at Noon to discuss the underwhelming play of Edmonton Oilers 4th overall pick in 2016 Jesse Puljujarvi, and if the Oilers should consider trading the 21- year old.

Dave Tippett is filling out his coaching staff with the Edmonton Oilers, bringing in Jim Playfair as an associate coach on Thursday.

Tippett and Playfair have plenty of history – Playfair was on Tippett’s staff as an associate with the Arizona Coyotes from 2011 to 2017.

Playfair brings 21 years of experience coaching in the pros between the IHL, ECHL, AHL and NHL. He spent six years with the Calgary Flames, serving as assistant for three years, head coach for one, and associate for two.

He’s no stranger to Edmonton, either. As a player, Playfair was actually drafted by the Oilers in the first round in 1982 but only suited up for two games.

Tippett was named Oilers head coach last month.
