EuroVision: Finland’s must-see empty-net miss

EuroVision: Highlights, notes, tweets and photos from across the pond – where the lockout doesn’t quite translate

We love to see professional hockey players make the kind of amateur-hour mistakes that we ourselves have made in shinny. Scoring on your net, running into your own teammate, missing an empty-net goal…

The Germans call it Schadenfreude – taking pleasure in the misery of others.

The Finnish call it Sakari Salminen on a breakaway with no goaltender to stand in his way.

Edmonton Oiler legend and GM of Finland’s national team, Jari Kurri looks on as Salminen blows a golden vacant-cage opportunity versus Sweden over the weekend.

Something I’d do in men’s league for sure (via @Russotrib):

Reminds me of Nashville Predators centre Craig Smith’s empty-net gaffe, which took place a year ago, nearly to the date:

Good news, Calgary Flames fans.

Forward Roman Cervenka has recovered from his back injury and is ready to debut for Lev Prague, the KHL’s Czech team announced Monday.

Avangard Omsk sold the 26-year-old’s KHL rights to Lev, according to R-Sport, in late September after the NHL lockout became official, but he continued to play a few games in the Czech league and suffered an injury last month.

“He recovered his back injury, joined coach Sykora’s team and will fly to Novgorod (Tuesday),” Lev stated on its site.

Regarded as one of hockey’s greatest talents outside of the NHL, Cervenka was the KHL’s top goal-getter in the 2010-11. His first game with Lev, the lockout home of Zdeno Chara, is slated for Wednesday.

Only eight of the NHL’s locked-out projected starting goaltenders are playing anywhere right now. Goalie jobs are harder to come by, and insurance premiums are high:

Ottawa Senators winger Erik Condra has upgraded from Germany’s third division to its seond division. Baby steps:

Florida Panthers winger Tomas Kopecky has returned to North America for rehab:

Dustin Brown, a tourist in Switzerland:

How can a country so beautiful insist on uniforms so hideous? Oh, yeah. Money:

And as European teams get back to club play this week after the international break, we’ll leave you with the KHL’s top 10 goals of October:
