Flames unveil new third sweater at fan event

The Calgary Flames officially unveiled their new alternate sweaters Sunday before media and fans.

Calgary Flames fans were treated to the unveiling of their team’s new third jersey Sunday during the inaugural Flames Fest at the Scotiabank Saddledome, even though the new duds leaked earlier this month through video game NHL 14.

The red sweaters still feature the traditional Flaming C logo, although it is shrunken and sits under the word Calgary in script. A western-style shoulder yoke and tie-down laces on the front were used in the design to represent the Alberta club’s heritage. A new shoulder patch was created to celebrate the landscape of southern Alberta.

The sweater features a new two-colour name and number font but maintains a nod to tradition by including the old Atlanta Flames ‘A’ for the alternate captain patch.

“I like it because I am very proud of our city and every time the Flames wear our third jersey ‘Calgary’ is front and centre on television screens and newspapers around the world,” said Jim Peplinski, Calgary Flames vice-president of business development, in a statement. “Many of our fans have been asking us for a third jersey. We listen. And we believe we have delivered a third jersey that will appeal to those who wanted a third jersey while adding to our classic vintage jersey and solid current jersey.”

The alternate uniform, which has been in design since the spring of 2012, consists of a new red sock style but uses the same black pants and gloves. The final result is the work of Reebok in conjunction with both the Flames and the NHL.
