The legend of Gritty continues to grow.

While the Philadelphia Flyers added a couple losses to their record this week, the team’s vulgarian mascot picked up a win off the ice.

Gritty, who has taken both the hockey and mascot worlds by storm over the past month or so, was honoured by Philadelphia City Council this week when a resolution was passed officially welcoming the rambunctious, rotund rapscallion to the city “and honoring the spirit and passion that Gritty has brought to the city of Philadelphia and to the entire country, both on and off the ice.”

Council member at-large Helen Gym brought forward the resolution, in which she said “there is a small part of every Philadelphian embedded in the soul of Gritty.”

You can read the full transcript of the tongue-in-cheek resolution HERE and watch the video below.

“Gritty may be a hideous monster, but he is our hideous monster,” Gym concluded on Thursday.

It was ultimately passed, but not unanimously. One council member called dropped a totally-uncalled-for-yet-not-entirely-inaccurate, “He ugly,” when opposing the resolution.

That council member might want to “sleep with one eye open tonight.”
