Golden Knights goalie Pickard asks fans to help design his new mask

Colorado Avalanche goalie Calvin Pickard gets across in a hurry to make an amazing glove save on Arizona Coyotes forward Tobias Rieder.

Calvin Pickard is asking Las Vegas residents to provide him with ideas for his new goalie mask that he’ll wear in net come the 2017-18 season for the Golden Knights.

Only residents of the Las Vegas area will have a chance to have their ideas featured on the mask. They’ll have from Aug. 1-4 to submit their entries, then Dave Gunnarsson, who’s done work for Pickard in the past, will bring the visuals to life.

Submissions can be made on vegasgoldenknights.com, while Pickard, who was selected by the Golden Knights first overall in the 2017 expansion draft, encourages fans to share their entries on social media with the hashtag “#PicksMaskContest.”

Pickard decided to turn to the fans because he feels he made a poor decision when he picked lightning bolts on one of his former masks.

“Whether it’s throwing out some written suggestions or sketching something out. I’m still going to have Dave paint it, but I want the fans to help me decide what he paints,” wrote Pickard on the Golden Knights’ website.

Pickard says that he’s an “open guy”, but would like the designs that are submitted to incorporate the Golden Knights and the city of Las Vegas. When he played with the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds, he had the Space Needle on his mask.

Marc-Andre Fleury will also be participating in the #PicksMaskContest before the start of the upcoming NHL season.
