Maybe a literal golden knight would’ve been too predictable?
The Vegas Golden Knights unveiled their first mascot in franchise history Friday night prior to a game against the Detroit Red Wings and hockey fans had a field day on social media.
The mascot is a humanoid Gila monster named Chance.
Gila (pronounced “hee-la”) monsters are venomous lizards found in the Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico. According to National Geographic, Gila monsters are “lethargic creatures that feed primarily on eggs raided from nests and newborn mammals.”
Chance, however, feeds off the energy of the fans inside the T-Mobile Arena and is the opposite of lethargic based on his vigorous pre-game flag-waving. Our sources indicate Chance is not venomous.
As soon as the team made the announcement, some people online reacted with some confusion while others tried figuring out what exactly Chance reminded them of.
Fittingly, many of the responses were pure gold.

It’s easy to poke fun, but Chance’s fan base is quickly growing.
